Mi casa? My Home?

(In english below)

Rechazo                  Confianza reducida      Soledad

Aislamiento          Baja autoestima           Tristeza

OK so you have thought it through and that dog that so needed a home is at yours. You were ready for the emotional roller coaster to follow, or so you believed.

There have been plenty of articles and studies about preparing for adopting a dog, and I don’t wish to argue or debate any of those. But I do want to emphasise the effect on the dog to all those of you that, for whatever reason, decide to return the dog. Like a piece of clothing that doesn’t fit, or food that has passed its sell by date, or that product that you bought over the internet and got the wrong model.

Dogs are not inanimate objects but living beings with feelings.

Rejection            Reduced trust          Loneliness

Withdrawal        Low self-esteem      Sadness

         Resulting in more stress

And now imagine that this has happened several times to you.

The adaptation can be hard; nobody is denying that. They can be dogs that have lived with a lot of stress and developed associated problems. Maybe the dog doesn’t immediately fit with your lifestyle, or with your family, or with the animals that you already have at home; or perhaps it is just more difficult than you expected. But it is a responsibility that you have assumed and with time all of these are left behind. You are going to need all your patience and look for help from your family and maybe professionals.

And lastly think, THINK and THINK again about if you are really ready, and have the resources necessary, for what can be the best decision you have ever taken.

The perfect dog doesn’t exist, the same way the perfect person doesn’t either.
